Norsk:

English:

The Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design at the University of Bergen has proposed to the University Board to discontinue the MA in Curatorial Practice. Proposal to Close Ma in Curatorial Practice

This is a unique, mobile and international MA programme that has established itself in the field of contemporary culture over 10 years. It is also the only curatorial education available in Norway.  MA in Curatorial Practice

With its focus on practice, ethics and experimentation, the course has attracted a rich diversity of candidates who have often been able to combine education with continuing paid work or as freelancers.

The programme addresses local, national and international contexts with a strong connection to the professional art world. It is a special model of curatorial education, and its success can be seen in the achievements of its alumni and their ongoing commitment to the programme.

Since the establishment in 2015, on the back of a thorough practice-based research process in the form of a pilot programme from 2004 to 2014, its pedagogical model has proven to be relevant to many.

The MA programme has proved its value as a research and knowledge exchange platform for many kinds of curatorial practices belonging to the fields of contemporary music, performance and theatre, in addition to contemporary visual art.

Should the Faculty’s suggestion be adopted by the University Board, the Board will throw out this long period of investment and development of a transdisciplinary study programme without any academic justification.

We understand that the University prides itself on caring for diverse disciplines and supporting graduate candidates with relevant knowledge and experience for a wide variety of roles in society. We ask the Board to put your actions behind these words.

We further recognise that curatorial education programmes in many European countries are under threat of closure and therefore want strongly to urge the University Board to resist this trend. We hope the Board will support this important programme with proper resources and an ongoing intellectual commitment. The knowledge and experience developed in Bergen should not be eroded by short sighted shifts of attention such as this incomprehensible proposal to close the course.

The undersigned call on the University Board of the University of Bergen to allocate sufficient resources to allow this important study programme to flourish.

By closing this program, you greatly impact the international reach and reputation of the program. This negatively impacts my career moving forward because the reputation of the program cannot grow. I’m shocked and disheartened by this decision.

After my graduation from the program, I keep telling my colleagues that I would like to organize similar program in Indonesia. The practice-led aspect shaped by peer learning helps me to understand my own work. The program should continue!

It is a disservice to the world of arts and culture to discontinue this type and level of study that is borderless in scope, with infinite outcomes for some of the most promising, urgent and necessary artists, curators and conversations to shape our world.
